Virginia Tech’s Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) team brought another trophy back to Blacksburg! The project management team came in second place at the national competition in Reno, NV on February 9-12, 2022.

Two teams represented the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC). The first team competed in the project management challenge which focuses on the overall construction process. The second, more specialized team, competed in the concrete competition.The MLSoC teams faced 1,331 students on 181 teams from 53 different universities during the ASC competition.

Students Diana Logue (captain), Grace DiGate, Thaison Smith, Cameron Brown, Hunter Armstrong, Claire Wright, and Grant Sarver (Alternate) led the project management team to the second place win.

Students Bethany Fernandez (captain), Graham Studwell, Claudia Morgan, Mark Jusczak, Emily Pickup, and Travis Edmonds came just short of placing in the concrete challenge.

In the fall, the teams competed in a regional competition in Atlanta, Ga. The commercial team came in first place and the concrete team came in second, missing first place by just three percent.

In this competition, the commercial team converted to the project management team which has some additional requirements including contract risk evaluation, subcontractor evaluation, and a go/no go decision about whether or not to pursue a job.

The Associated Schools of Construction is a professional organization dedicated to developing and advancing construction education. The competitions help students apply their classroom learning and turn it into real-world problems, similar to what they may face after graduation. The challenges also connect students with employers which may lead to internships and full-time employment offers. One hundred and thirty-six companies attended the spring 2022 competition.
