Why did you choose Virginia Tech?
"I have been immersed in the construction industry for most of my life, initially working for a family friend who owned a general contracting business and helping my father with various projects around our home. When it came time to choose a college, I was uncertain about where to start. On the recommendation of my aunt, a Virginia Tech alumna, I began researching the university and discovered the building construction program. The program immediately captured my interest.
During a high school visit to Virginia Tech, I toured the Myers-Lawson School of Construction with my family. The experience solidified my decision to pursue this path. Seeing the Bishop-Favaro BuildLab, learning about the program's curriculum and outstanding job placement rates, as well as receiving guidance from the student ambassadors were all pivotal moments in my decision-making process.
Since being accepted into the program, I have completed two highly successful internships in locations I would never imagine I'd have the opportunity to live in, never mind work in. These experiences have broadened my perspective and prepared me for the industry. Most recently, I accepted my first full-time offer just weeks after attending the construction-focused career fair, a testament to the exceptional opportunities provided by Virginia Tech and the school of construction. Why did you choose Building Construction (BC)?
"Everything we do on a daily basis is due in part to the built environment - I want to be able to be a part of building the processes that make our lives both convenient and even possible. Pursuing this area of study enables me to do this.":
Career Goals
"In addition to managing my own projects and pursuing certifications to enhance my team’s capabilities, I aspire to identify scopes of work that my company typically outsources and explore opportunities to establish an in-house division to self-perform those tasks. For example, during a past internship, a colleague acquired a small electrical contracting business, rebranding it under the general contractor we worked for. This strategic move allowed the company to self-perform nearly all electrical scopes, improving cost efficiency and control. I believe initiatives like these are pivotal in delivering accurate estimates and competitive pricing, ultimately driving value for project owners."
What would you tell students who are interested in joining the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC)?
"Many of my friends in other majors admire the close-knit community within our program. Whether it's collaborating on homework, preparing for exams together on the same floor, or participating in field trips to job sites, no other major offers the unique opportunities that building construction provides. Additionally, I deeply value the program's sense of camaraderie and its small-town atmosphere within the context of such a large university."
