Role and Background

Dr. Walid Thabet serves as the William E. Jamerson Professor for the Department Building Construction in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction and Director of the Virtual Facilities Research Laboratory (VFRL) . He joined Virginia Tech in 1997.

Walid’s teaching focuses on construction means and methods, planning and scheduling, assemblies estimating, managing and delivering design/build projects, BIM for facility lifecycle management and advanced technology in construction. His research focuses on Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), BIM for Facility Management, digital twins and graph databases applications in construction.  His recent projects involved collaboration with various industry partners from major construction companies in the United States as well as large educational owners. 

From 2002 through 2019, Walid led Winter Education Abroad programs to Portugal, Spain, and Peru. Between 2009-2021, Walid was also an adjunct professor to the University of Piura, Lima campus where he taught a construction management graduate course in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Previously, Walid  served as Department Head of Building Construction from 2007 to 2012.

Education

Walid holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management) from Virginia Tech, a MS degree in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Waterloo University, Canada, and a BS in Civil Engineering from Kuwait University. 

He has a Certificate of Management in BIM (CM-BIM) from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).
