Role and Background

Stefan Schäfer serves as a Full Professor and Director of the Institute for Constructive Design and Building Construction for the Technical University of Darmstadt, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He joined the Myers-Lawson School of Construction as an Affiliated Faculty in 2024. 

Schäfer‘s research focuses on constructive design, building construction, and green building design. In his current programs, Schäfer is exploring energetic building performance and efficiency, energetic retrofitting strategies, urban heating, 3D printing in building construction, and the use of drones in building maintenance.

Prof. Stefan Schäfer serves Virginia Tech through the Myers-Lawson School of Construction with a wealth of knowledge in different scientific fields. He contributes to the school’s core values through architectural and engineering knowledge and skills. He has collaborated for many years with worldwide famous experts like Frei Otto (Germany), Werner Sobek (Germany), and Renzo Piano (Italy).

Education

Prof. Stefan Schäfer holds a master‘s (Dipl-Ing.) degree in architecture and urban design from the University of Stuttgart and a master‘s degree (Dipl.-Ing FH) in architecture from the University of Applied Science in Kaiserslautern.
