Role and Background

Dr. Matthew Hallowell is a Presidential Teaching Scholar and K. Stanton Lewis Professor of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Construction Safety Research Alliance. He joined the Myers-Lawson School of Construction as an Affiliated Faculty in 2024.

Dr. Hallowell's research focuses on construction safety. He is exploring the concept of energy can be used to identify, prioritize, and control workplace hazards. His research, teaching, and service aim to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities. Dr. Hallowell has partnered with Dr. Brian Kleiner to collaborate on creating and experimentally testing hazard recognition strategies.

Dr. Hallowell serves Virginia Tech through the Myers-Lawson School of Construction with a wealth of knowledge in construction safety. He contributes to the school’s core values through evidence-based approaches to the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities. 

Education

Dr. Hallowell earned a B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Bucknell University and a PhD from Oregon State University with a joint focus on Civil Engineering and Occupational Safety and Health. Before his academic career, he worked as a laborer in construction.
