Role and Background

Dr. Alexander S. Brand, P.E. serves as an Assistant Professor in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and an Affiliate Faculty in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He joined the Myers-Lawson School of Construction as an Affiliated Faculty in 2024.

Dr. Brand's research focuses on the materials science of civil infrastructure materials. In his current research, he is exploring the impacts of recycled and by-product materials on the hydration and microstructure of cementitious materials, including additive-manufactured concrete structures. He aims to establish microstructure-property and kinetic relationships in cement-based materials. He is partnering with Dr. Andrew McCoy to collaborate on developing novel cementitious mixtures and standardized tests for builders in Virginia to implement in housing construction.

Education

Dr. Brand holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was previously a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Virginia.
